The Art of Layering in LA

GUEST BLOGGER: NATALIE ENGEL

1.13.2021

Layering in Los Angeles? Sounds like the ultimate paradox, but it’s a thing. I’m here to tell you that it’s not always blue skies, sunny, and 75. There are days where yes, the temperature actually drops into the 50s (and below). And interestingly enough, layering for warmth doubles as a fashion statement.

As winter rolls over Southern California, Angelenos are reaching for sweaters, jackets, coats, and on the occasional blue moon...their raincoat. Layering for a mild climate doesn’t need to be so, how do you put it, simple? Boring? Mindless? Instead, mixing different pieces that are suitable for both warmth and style relies on creativity. Hence, the art of layering.

Before defaulting to the obvious top and jacket combination, opt for something more unexpected. For example, pairing a slip dress with a wool coat gets the job done and scores you style points, too. Winter is the perfect time to play with different styles to create texture and depth in your outfit. This is definitely something I miss in my wardrobe come summer.

I’ve been searching high and low for items that will carry me through the colder months and into the transitional season of spring. My latest fashion brand crush is LVIR. As seen on the likes of Net-A-Porter, Saks Fifth Avenue, SSENSE, and more—LVIR is the quintessential cool-girl minimalist clothing line hailing from South Korea. The best part? Their first brick-and-mortar experience in the U.S. happens to be right here in Los Angeles at ROW DTLA!

Ahead, I share my favorite looks from LVIR this season. Get ready to layer up Los Angeles!

Tailored Suit + Cozy Tee

A must-have wardrobe staple. Suit pants with a high waist and wide leg are both flattering and comfortable. And the suit jacket is tailored in an equally flattering fashion. I felt it was necessary to keep the t-shirt in the same color family—neutrals (more specifically brown) are definitely having a moment this season.

Cashmere Sweatsuit + Plaid Blazer

With the year that was 2020, I think it’s only fair to splurge on a sweatsuit that doubles as a proper outfit. And this one in cashmere definitely ticks all the boxes of style, comfort, and warmth. I was partly inspired by Princess Diana’s notable blazer/sweatsuit look with this one.

Slip + Coat

I’m always a sucker for a midi dress. The perfect go-to for a day-to-night ensemble is a chic, mid length slip (like the one pictured here). Top it off with a coat of similar length to add an extra dose of style and function.

White Out + Fur Vest

Whoever said you can’t rock white after Labor Day is surely mistaken. I say you double down and pair a white top and with white pants, even in the middle of winter. Top off the outfit with something unusual like this furry vest. Extra points if you choose a turtleneck in the styling process.

Cropped Sweatshirt + Trousers

Whether you’re going on a quick jaunt for errands or heading to the office (whenever that may be again), trousers are the multifaceted bottom we all need. Those, paired with a cropped sweatshirt to show off the pant waistline, are an easy and flattering combo.

Serve looks and function by getting creative with your layering this season. And if you find yourself in the LA area or are looking for a special day trip, I suggest carving out some time to visit ROW DTLA. Layer up!
