Friends of Banks Journal

John E.’s Curated Collection

Banks Journal’s mission is simple: they aim to merge style & function with a sustainable approach to design and development. Thanks to its founders’ unique blend of Japanese and Australian heritage, there has always been an importance placed on this fusion between coastal living and a love of design.

That’s why it was a no-brainer when longtime friend of the brand, John Esguerra, was brought in to execute a curated collection with Banks Journal. For a period of time prior to this collaboration, Banks Journal had partnered with his store Single Double in Oahu’s Chinatown to create their first Hawaii-based retail space. Ultimately, they were able to experience the grittier side of Hawaii, juxtaposed with the Aloha Spirit of the island - an experience that made it clear he would be a perfect fit for future endeavors.

With a modern mixture of illustrations, function and photography, John E designed the collection based upon ideas from his personal clothing, guided by Banks Journal's contemporary aesthetics.

“The figure that he painted was one of unique talent and an astonishingly creative skillset in bringing together physical objects that never should feel at home together, and making them look like they were born to be beside one another.” This sentiment bore the idea for the entire collection; his vision was woven into something that both he and the brand are incredibly proud of.

This collection is an indubitable ode to “laid back” living; this idea that simplicity can be achievable without sacrificing style. With a mixture of textures, designs, patterns and colors, his pieces are accessible, elevated and everything you could want in an everyday wardrobe.

When asked about his favorite piece from the collection, John E states, “I love them all. The pieces in the collection can be worn in many parts of the day, but I’d say my favorite are the John E board shorts. They fit, look great and if I'm wearing them - I’m in the water surfing!”
