90s Fashion
9.18.2019
90s fashion is back in a big way and it couldn’t be more rad. But did you know you can shop the very real, much cooler version of a Delia’s catalogue right here at ROW DTLA? Well, we do and we did.
We walked-and-talked along Market Row with multi-hyphenate Tiana Verhagen—an in-demand DJ, venue consultant, music curator, with global residencies and an events bio that includes campaigns with adidas x Kylie Jenner, Louis Vuitton, and London Fashion Week.
Lucky us, Tiana pulled some 90s looks from the ROW DTLA tenants that are all that and a bag of chips. Read on to hear more about Tiana, and tune into her Spotify 90s playlist for a fun throwback!
My style is very versatile, kind of tongue-in-cheek. I like mixing high and low, and I’m heavily influenced by western and vintage attire.
My personal style is modern cowboy meets masculine chic.
I love the range of style and the iconic looks. You’ve got Shania Twain, whose brand is cowboy boots and leopard print, while the Spice Girls are all energetic and styled in groovy, form-fitting pieces. And then there’s Fiona Apple and Alanis Morisette—who are known for grunge and being effortlessly cool.
I live in my mom jeans, turtlenecks, Dr. Martens and oversized blazers. Then when I’m spinning, I like dressing up in bright, bold, standout pieces.
Biker short! Huge fan.
Music and fashion to me, go equally hand and hand. Both give me the control, freedom and creativity to express myself.
I’ve always been interested in music, back to when I was a kid. I’m a 90s baby so I grew up with more of the pop acts. I think my parents heavily influenced my appreciation for different styles of music, and that’s where the love came from. My dad is a big alternative rock guy, while my mom was more eclectic and indie.
Moby’s ‘Play’. I’ll never forget hearing that album for the first time, I was 9. It was my first introduction to more experimental sounds. Also, Sheryl Crow’s ‘Sheryl Crow.’ My mom was always playing her; its super nostalgic for me. And Spice Girls’ ‘Spice’. They were such a big part of my childhood. I was so fascinated by them. I remember saying I wanted to be a Sporty Spice when I grew up, and to be fair I’m not too far off with what I’m doing.
Equal parts Kanye West, Victoria Beckham, Peggy Gou and Dolly Parton.
If it’s for a brand or event, I’ll spend hours on Soundcloud trying to find good remixes and stuff I haven’t heard. If I’m playing a club and I need bangers, then I’ll search on dj pools or go out. And if it’s just for me, then I like to see what my friends are listening to.
Any Hip-hop hands down—Biggie, Tupac, Missy Elliott, Outkast and the Fugees. “Show Me Love” by Robyn, Ace of Base’s “All That She Wants,” and TLC’s “Scrubs” are always guaranteed sing-alongs. And I love throwing in really fun and unexpected songs, like Fatboy Slim’s “Praise You,” The Bucketheads’ “The Bomb!,” and Vengaboys’ “We Like to Party.”
There’s a private members-only club I play in London; the venue is unbelievable. I got to play some rad parties there during Fashion Week which has always been a dream. Mark Ronson had played the night before me, the whole experience was surreal.
I love LA, and there’s such cool spots, but I think in general our club culture is mainstream and driven too much by Hip-hop. The US is more into novelty dance acts like Marshmellow and Billie Eilish. It’s not as focused on the sophisticated dance music I’m into. London would be where it’s happening!
