A Day at Row

How Jacob Jonas spends his day

10.06.2021

As the Creative Director of Jacob Jonas The Company, Jacob’s effort has reached global audiences because of a desire to make the medium of dance more visible and valued. How does he do this? By engaging in non-traditional collaborations with artists including Kanye West, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Emmanuel Lubezki, and Vanessa Beecroft.

“When Jacob Jonas The Company performs, energy doesn’t just seem to bounce off the walls, it reverberates off of bodies.” -Los Angeles Times

This October, Jonas will be presenting original work across nontraditional venues in their newest program ACTIVATE LA, presented in association with the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. One of those venues, excitingly enough, is ROW! Ahead of Jacob Jonas’s performance, we asked him to share some of his favorite spots in the district, and why this space inspired him. Follow along:

As a third generation Angeleno, I have always felt a deep connection to the artistic and cultural scene in Los Angeles. When I first visited ROW DTLA, I could feel the energy of the space and It inspired me to activate it with dance. Part of Jacob Jonas The Company’s mission is to make dance a more visible and valued art form. I knew ROW would make a great partner to revitalize the live dance experience in Los Angeles because of its strong historical ties to community and art.

One of my favorite places on the campus is the HIGHTIDE Store DTLA. I use notebooks in my creative process to write down ideas or concepts of the work I’m creating so I appreciate how HIGHTIDE’s approach is inspired by design and function. I also admire the craft at Still Life Ceramics and their focus on local talent. And of course the Egg, Avo and Bacon Burrito at Go Get Em Tiger is fire.

We are very excited to be activating ROW DTLA’s outdoor rooftop, transforming a non-traditional space into an open-air stage. We will be presenting a world premiere work, Juxtapose, with live music composed by Anibal Sandoval, a composer, sound artist, movement performer and educator also from Los Angeles. We’ve partnered with Rappahannock and Pikunico for special dinner menus to enjoy before the show as well!
